Clopay Corporation® Partnership Helps New Habitat for Humanity Home to Local Family of Seven

Habitat for Humanity family 2025

This holiday season is extra special for Cherrish Deaton and her six children. The family is about to move into their new five-bedroom home in Piqua, a dream made possible by a partnership between Habitat for Humanity of Miami & Shelby Counties, Ohio, and Clopay Corporation (“Clopay”), North America’s largest garage door manufacturer.

After six months of construction, the Deatons will receive the keys to their new home during a dedication ceremony on December 16, 2025.

This is the fourth home Clopay has sponsored in the region over the last five years. The company contributed $160,000 to the project and donated a BridgeportTM Steel garage door, which was manufactured at Clopay’s facility in Troy, Ohio.

In addition to financial support, Clopay employees volunteered their time to install the garage door, while the company’s sister brands, AMES®, ClosetMaid®, and Hunter®, provided tools, organization systems, and ceiling fans to make the home more functional and energy-efficient.

“Our partnership with Habitat for Humanity is part of our ongoing commitment to the communities in which we live and work,” said Vic Weldon, President of Clopay Corporation. “We are proud to help Cherrish and her family build a safe, welcoming home, and we are especially grateful for the hands-on involvement of our employees.”

For Deaton, an EMT who has worked in the Greater Dayton area for over a decade, this new home represents more than just a fresh start, it’s the fulfillment of a long-held dream. After moving to Miami County with the support of the YWCA and the Ohio Domestic Violence Network, Deaton completed 100 volunteer hours to qualify for Habitat’s program. In return, she will assume a 30-year, no-interest mortgage on the home.

“This is a huge step forward for my family,” said Deaton. “Thanks to the support from Habitat and companies like Clopay, my kids and I are moving from a small apartment into a safe, spacious home where we can start fresh.”

To qualify for a Habitat home, Deaton and her family contributed 285 “sweat equity” hours, working alongside volunteers to help build their home. Deaton also took educational courses on budgeting and home maintenance and will be responsible for paying off the mortgage.

“The Deaton home is the second of three planned builds on this stretch of Manier Avenue in Piqua,” said Scott Barr, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Miami & Shelby Counties. “Clopay’s generous donations and volunteer efforts have been key to making this home a reality. With over 1,600 employees in the area, Clopay has proven to be an incredible partner, and we are deeply grateful for their commitment to helping strengthen our local community.”
