WindCode® is Clopay’s rating system for doors built to handle powerful winds from hurricanes, tropical storms, and other severe weather. Each WindCode® garage door is ranked from W1 to W9, so homeowners and builders can choose a wind-rated garage door that meets local building code requirements.
What sets WindCode® garage doors apart is that all the reinforcement you need is built right into the structure. No need for extra posts, pins, or a special setup—just close and lock the door and it’s ready for incoming winds. This “storm ready” approach stands in contrast to many reinforcement systems that require you to install hardware or bracing before every storm and if any part of that setup is missing, your garage door may not provide the level of protection you expect.
With WindCode® garage doors, reinforcement is part of the design. No scrambling before a storm, just straightforward, reliable garage door reinforcement options, impact-rated windows, and pressure ratings tailored for wind speeds from 90 mph up to more than 150 mph.
Wondering if you need a “storm ready” garage door for your home? The answer depends on where you live and your local building codes. Many coastal regions and hurricane-prone areas require them as part of their safety standards. The first step is to check your address on local wind maps, which highlight zones at risk for strong winds and storms.
Resources like your city’s building department can help identify whether you’re in an area that calls for a WindCode® garage door. Many local offices publish these requirements online, and you can always consult your garage door dealer to help interpret the guidelines for your property.
Staying compliant is often required for homeowner’s insurance as well, helping you avoid denied claims after a storm. With both safety and peace of mind on the line, making sure your garage door reinforcement meets local code is a smart investment.
Every WindCode® garage door is engineered and tested to meet or exceed wind-rated standards and Clopay offers an impressive range of options to match just about any home style and safety requirement.
